TURA, JUNE 2: Meghalaya police yesterday evening rescued Sudhir Haldar from Arenggre village, near Betasing in South West Garo hills. Police also arrested three abductors who had been unleashing terror in the Assam-Meghalaya border villages.
Haldar (63) hails from Mokhawa village, near Boko in Assam’s Kamrupdistrict. He was abducted on May 28 from Hajongpara, near Betasing. He is employed as construction manager with a Garo hills based firm.
“Our boys managed to rescue Haldar yesterday evening in an operation and arrested three persons, who were involved in the abduction”, said Aditya Goenka, South West Garo hills SP.
Betasing is about 55 km from Tura and about 12 km from Ampati, the district headquarter of South West Garo hills.
The abductors have been identified as – Newbirth Marak, 21 Phang Sangma, 18 and Emlath Sangma, 18. The suspected rebels of a new outfit – Lama are from Jelbongpara village, near Betasing.
“The criminals have identified themselves as members of Lama outfit led by one Gorang. We are trying to find out details. However it is a major breakthrough as we have learnt that a mixed gang is operating in the area”, Goenka added.
Following the arrest of the trio, police picked up Hafijur Rahman from Chondon Nokotgre village, near Betasing. Rahman is a resident of Fekamari village under South Salmara police station of Assam’s Dhubri district.
“It was raining and the operation took place between 9:30 to 10:00 pm. There was no firing and our boys managed to located the hideout from its intelligence inputs. The leader of the outfit Gorang took advantage of the darkness and managed to escape”, Goenka added.
Police has registered a case and interrogation is on.
The rescue operation is still on in the area. There have been several cases of abduction along the Assam – Meghalaya border villages, especially from Mankachar area.– From Our Correspondent
