SHILLONG, JUNE 1: Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) on Monday demanded that the home minister institute an inquiry into the alleged unwarranted police lathi-charge injuring several mostly women.
“We demand that home minister Roshan Warjri immediate order setting up of an inquiry into the incident,” HYC – Jaiaw leader Wankit Kupar Ryntathiang told reporters at a news conference on Monday.
Stating that the home minister should take responsibility of the incident, he said, “Stern action should also be taken against the ‘male police personnel’ who have executed the lathi-charge on the women, as it is unlawful.”
Several people mostly women were injured after police lathi-charge against the crowd after a public meeting of the HYC held in the city on Friday.
Also stating that the lathi-charge was unwarranted, Ryntathiang said, “We condemned the police department and the state government led by Mukul Sangma for treating the public as terrorists.”
“We protest against the lathi charge since not a single member of the crowd had carried any lethal weapon,” he said adding “The crowd had attended the meeting on the VAB and not with an intention to create any law and order problem.”
According to him, the police had failed to use other options like tear gas and water cannon to control the crowd but without any warning started beating up the people with lathi.
HYC Women Wing leader R Kurbar said that women in fact had decided to lead from the front to ensure all people attending the meeting disperse peacefully.
“But police at the order of the SP starts beating the people,” she said while condemning the allegation of the SP M Kharkrang that HYC was using women to shield them.- By Our Reporter
