MPF meets Guv on bills

SHILLONG, MAY 25: Opposition Meghalaya Peoples’ Front (MPF) on Monday sought intervention of Governor V Shanmuganathan for passing of the pending village administration bills by the state government in view of the present situation due to growing public resentment.

“We urge the Governor to immediately intervene into the matter related to the need of passing the village administration bills,” Leader of Opposition Donkupar Roy told reporters after a meeting with the Governor on Monday.

Admitting that the bills may have conflicting issues, Roy, however, said, “But the bills which are yet to reach his (Governor) office can always be amended through amendments as even the constitution of India was amended so many times.”

Roy, who is also the president of the United Democratic Party (UDP) also said that delegation of the MPF has also apprise the governor on the ongoing indefinite hunger strike by a former chief executive member of the KHADC Adelbert Nongrum and others.

“We have also urged for his immediate intervention so that an appeal can also be made to Nongrum to end his indefinite fast,” Roy added.

When asked what the assurance from the governor was, Roy said, “The governor had given a patience hearing and he has also expressed his displeasure that any citizens should suffer due to such issue.”

Roy also informed that issue relating to the law and order situation in Garo hills and Khasi hills region of the state besides other issues were also taken up with the Governor.We have expressed the need for immediate solution into the problem,” he said.-By Our Reporter
