SHILLONG, MAY 22: Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) on Friday burnt the effigy of chief minister Mukul Sangma to protest against the delay of the state government to approve the KHAD (Village Administration) Bill, 2014.
The effigy was burnt right in front of the venue where former KHADC CEM Adelbert Nongrum and a youth supporter Goldy Warjri are staging their ongoing indefinite hunger strike at Barik point on Friday.
Before burning the effigy, KHNAM president Pyndapbor Saibon which is also part of the party’s indefinite sit-in-demonstration, said, “The burning of the effigy is to show our protest and condemn against the state government’s adamant attitude to pass the bill, pending for the past ten months.”
Saibon said KHNAM demands the state government to consider immediate passing of village administration bill and “If it (government) found any anomalies in the bill, amendments can always be brought to rectify them.”
Saibon also appealed to all concerned, especially the traditional chiefs and headmen, to come forward and join the movement.
“The protest we have taken up is not for anybody’s interest but it is for the interest of the indigenous community,” Saibon said.
Saibon expressed concern over the alleged attempt of the government to sent ‘agents’ in the name of ngos to try and mislead the people about the issue of demand for the village administration bill.
Meanwhile, the sit-in-demonstration staged by the KHNAM is also to extend its support and solidarity with Nongrum, whose hunger strike has entered the seventh day on Friday.- By Our Reporter
