SHILLONG, MAY 8: Security around Shillong city has been beefed up even as arsons cases were reported from Ri Bhoi district on Friday. The state police have warned of more arrest of pro-ILP ngos leaders’ who are wanted by the special court trying criminal cases filed against them under MMPO during the four-month long agitations two years ago.
On Thursday one of the main pro ILP leader KSU president Daniel Khyriem was arrested and his arrest led to immediate reactions as later in the night a government vehicle and a shop were set on fire after unidentified miscreants lobbed petrol bombs in two different places in the city.
Khyriem was arrested after he refused to accept the bailable warrant of arrest issued by the court yesterday and was sent to 14 days judicial custody.
East Khasi hills SP M Kharkhrang told reporters on Friday, “There is some more bailable warrant of arrest issued by the court which are pending for execution. We will soon execute them also.”
According to Kharkhrang, bailable warrant of arrest was issued by the court based on the 87 cases registered by the state police under Meghalaya Maintenance of Public Order (MMPO) Act against the leaders of the pro-ILP pressure ngos during their agitations in 2013.
Kharkhrang informed that these cases are related to arsons, stone-pelting, murder and other criminal activities that had taken place during the four months long agitations sponsored by the pro ILP NGOs demanding implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in 2013.
“Of the total cases registered, police have completed submitting charge-sheet of 82 cases to the court,” Kharkrang said, while informing that 80 members of the ngos were arrested and later released on bail
Khrakhrang informed that the police have to report to the court on the status of the execution of the bailable warrant of arrest issued by it adding the court has also fixed a date for police to reply on the matter.
Khyriem, the KSU chief was arrested from Sadar police station after he refused to accept the bailable warrant of arrest on Thursday. Police has registered at least seven cases under MMPO against the KSU leader.
Replying to a query Kharkhrang, however, said, “Yesterday was not the first attempt by the police to issue summon notices to all the leaders of the NGOs. Earlier, such summon notices were also issued several times, but neither the NGO leaders nor their family or relatives have accepted the notices issued.”
Kharkhrang informed that only after their refusals, police informed to the court, which then issue the bailable warrant of arrest against them.

Kharkhrang admitted that the arson cases yesterday is definitely a fall out of the arrest of Khyriem, though police are yet to make any arrest so far on the incidents.
Stating that security have been beefed up, Khrakhrang said, “Additional forces have been deployed in the district to thwart any attempt by miscreants to create law and order situation.
Kharkhrang said that there are so many places to be covered and the police will put the best use of the additional forces it has at its disposal.- By Our Reporter
