Recognise certificate issued by dorbars: Ngos, traditional heads

Shillong, Sept 29: Traditional heads and ngos asked the state government and Election Commission of India to recognize the “certificate” issued by the village dorbars even as they demanded that electoral hearings be extended to  village dorbars level to ensure that no doubtful voters gets to enroll in the electoral roll of the state.

Federation of Khasi-Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) president Jo Marwein told reporters  after the meeting of the ten ngos with headmen from 70 villages in and around Shillong Saturday, “We have decided to ask the state government and Election Commission to recognize the residential certificate issued by the village dorbars while verifying the documents in the process of voters enrollment in the state,”.

Marwein  said, “The meeting also demanded from the government to extend the hearings at the village dorbars level for verification to ensure that no outsiders with doubtful credential gets to enroll into the electoral roll of the state.”

At present the hearings were being conducted only at DC’s office. Marwein, “We felt that there is need to involved the village authorities in the process of verification as they can do the job better of identifying who is not a genuine citizen of their area.”

The  meeting also expressed concern over the unchecked influx in the state with Marwein informing that they have decided to demand for immediate implementation of the ‘Inner Line Permit’ in the state.”

KSU president Daniel Khyriem also  said that the ngos no doubt welcome the three tier identity card system and other effective mechanisms as proposed by the Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma to control influx but added that \they want the  government to show its seriousness towards the issue by immediate implementation of the ILP.

Khyriem said, “We demand that the state government to come out clear on its proposed strategies on influx within the coming days and whether there is elections or not, we will continue to pressure the government on ILP.”-By Our Reporter
