SHILLONG, APR 29: Opposition the arrest of a sordar, the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) has demanded that those who insisted that the sordar issue the NOC also be arrested immediately.
KHDAC CEM Adelbert Nongrum on Wednesday blamed the state government for the current situation that arose because of the failure of the government to approve the Khasi Hills Autonomous District (Village Administration) Bill.
The KHADC has also decided to convene an emergency meeting of the executive committee of the All Regional Parties Alliance (ARPA) on the issue.
“We expressed our concerns at the arrest of the sordar of Wahkhen village, Skhembor Khongjirem, not because he is a criminal but just because he has fulfilled his duties as per prevailing traditional and customary practices,” Nongrum told reporters.
Nongrum accompanied by the his executive members (EMs) including EM Elaka, KP Pangniang, Morningstar Mawsor and LG Nongsiej visited the Sadar Police Station, where Khongjirem was taken after being arrested from the court to expressed their solidarity with him.
Terming the action against the sordar as an ‘abuse of power’, Nongrum said, “We want the judiciary to also arrest those involved in insisting the sordar to issue certificates.”
Having said this, Nongrum was of the opinion despite the court order prohibiting headmen from issuing NOC , the state government has always sought the assistant of the traditional headmen to implement different government schemes.
Nongrum informed that the KHADC EC will convene an emergency meeting on the issue matter even as he termed the action as “total act of suppression against the indigenous community.”
Nongrum also appealed to all the legislators in the state to also intervene and ensure that the interest and welfare of the indigenous community is preserved and protected.- By Our Reporter
