SHILLONG, APR 13: Meghalaya state transport department commissioner has directed all coal laden trucks to strictly adhere to the Supreme Court and the National Green Tribunal –NGT-directive and pass through only the designated weighbridge or else the violators will be liable for penalty and actions.

In a statement issued on Monday, the transport commissioner said all concern are directed to strictly comply with the orders of the NGT pertaining to the transportation of extracted coal within and outside the state.

The commissioner said, “All concerns are directed to comply with the orders of the NGT with regards to permission for transportation of extracted coal.”  He also said, “Coal laden trucks should ensure to pass only through the designated weighbridges as identified by the NGT and notified by the state government.”

Further, commissioner also directed the coal trucks to strictly restrict carriage of load up to 9 metric tons.  He said, “No overloading is allowed which is in pursuance with the order of the Supreme Court and NGT.”

Stating that in the event of overloading which may result in traffic congestion, the commissioner said, “The owner of the concerned vehicle should be responsible and liable to penalty and action would be taken as per law.” He reiterated that the orders should be strictly adhered by all concerned in order to ensure smooth flow of traffic and compliance to the orders of the NGT.

The NGT has passed an interim order banning of coal mining in Meghalaya since April 16, last year but now has allowed transportation of the coal that had already been extracted prior to the ban on mining of coal in the state.- By Our Reporter
