SHILLONG, APR 10: A woman and her two siblings were rendered homeless after her ex-husband allegedly set fire to her house while she was away and was also subjected to regular physical abuse that led to two miscarriages. Strangely, the village authority chose not to intervene when the matter was brought to its notice by the woman.
Josna Nongsiej of Mawsikar, a village near Langpih, alleged that her house was set on fire by her ex-husband Sronling Lyngkhoi on March 20 while she stayed the night over at her parent’s house. She told reporters on Friday that only the next morning she discovered that her house was razed to ground.
Nongseij also alleged that her ex-husband was a habitual beat her even after separation and even threatened to hired contract killers to kill her and her two minor children. She said even the village headman Trat Nonglang refused to act when brought to his notice and instead said she can always rebuild a new house. She informed that the headman was related to her ex-husband.
Nongsiej then sought the help of the Hynniewtrep National Achik Movement (HANM) women’s wing who supported her with some clothes and CGI sheets but did not try to help the woman in filing police complaint.
In search of justice Nongsiej came to Shillong on Friday to voice her grievances through the media. She told reporters, “I strongly suspect that my husband is behind the burning of my house because he has regularly threatened to make my life a hell.”
Nongsiej also revealed that her family members are not willing to help file the police complaint as they thought it will involve lot of money as they belong to poor family. She said she had two miscarriages after she was beaten up by my ex-husband.
Nongsiej said she had filed a police complaint earlier but Lyngkhoi managed to get bail and alleged that her ex-husband had beaten her up even after staying separately for more than three years.
In some sort of succour the Meghalaya State Women’s Commission (MSWC) has taken up her case and recorded Nongseij statement.
MSWC chairperson Theilin Phanbuh told reporters the commission has directed the deputy commissioner and superintendent of police (SP) of West Khasi hills district to take necessary action.- By Our Reporter
