Killing of fishes prohibited

SHILLONG, APR 2: East Khasi hills district magistrate promulgate Section 144 CrPC prohibiting illegal killing of fishes at river Umsong (Shka Umsi to Shka Umsong) and the adjoining areas by using poisonous chemicals and explosive substances by any persons.

This order has been enforced due to rampant killing of fishes in the river by some miscreants using poisonous chemicals and explosives which may endanger the lives of the people living in the surrounding areas if not prevented.

The order comes into force with immediate effect and shall remain in force until further orders, a government statement said.

In West Jaintia Hills district too, the district magistrate has prohibited killing of fishes in all major rivers and streams within the district by illegal means and also undertaking any kind of activity which will causes danger to the aquatic and human life.

The district magistrate has banned the killing of fishes in all the said rivers within the district as it has been made to appear that some people try to make a living by indulging in mass killing of fishes by poisoning or otherwise on the pretext of sports activities, festivals, etc. By Our Reporter
