All parties on boundary:CM

SHILLONG, MAR 13: Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma sought the support of all political parties to put pressure on the union government to constitute a ‘Boundary Commission’ to resolve the age-old inter-state boundary dispute with Assam.

In his reply to the debate on the Governor’s address on Friday, Sangma proposed that all political parties shoulder the responsibility jointly without indulging in blame game as there is no space to politicize this issue and instead taken it up with the centre.

Sangma also reminded that the proposal for constituting of a Boundary Commission was a resolution adopted by the house in some years back.  According to him, a single political party will not be able to take a decision on this vexed issue.

“I proposed to soon hold a discussion with all the political parties in the state on how can we carry forward to see that the resolution adopted by this august house and its objective is achieved,” Sangma announced.

Sangma said the discussion will also be held with all those political parties who do not have any representatives in the state assembly as well as with all Independent legislators.

“Let us discuss on how to convince the centre to constitute the boundary commission,” Sangma said while saying that engaging only with Assam government will only take away precious time without resolving the issue which will also subject the people of the state in to a confuse situation.

Sangma  informed earlier the resolution taken by the state government was also taken up with the centre for constituting the boundary commission. “However, what was the reaction of Assam government is all known to us,” he said while informing that Assam response was not “encouraging”.

Sangma pointed out that there is tendency of the opposition parties to think that as both Assam and Meghalaya is being ruled by the same party therefore a solution to this pending issue will be resolved.  He informed that the government feel that there is a need to restrategize its approach to find a solution acceptable to both the states.

Sangma further reiterated that the boundary dispute will always remain as a top priority to the state government.-By Our Reporter
