SHILLONG, FEB 28: The United Democratic Party (UDP)- one of the coalition partner in ARPA executive committee in Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC)- accused the Congress led MUA –II coalition government of misusing its authority and destabilizing the APRA executive committee by nominating the former Meghalaya youth Congress president as nominated MDC.
UDP general secretary Allantry F Dkhar said that the nomination of Gabriel Wahlang as MDC by the Congress led MUA II coalition government was nothing but a clear cut attempt to toppled the ARPA executive committee.
Dkhar told reporters during a media conference on Saturday, “This is a clear case of misusing the authority for destabilizing the EC in KHADC and whether it is fair just because the KHADC failed to submit its recommendation on the nominated MDC for the opposition side to take advantage of the situation.”
Dkhar questioned the quickness of the state government in approving the nomination of the Wahlang as nominated MDC and said this is a clear attempt to ‘destabilize’ the ARPA EC in KHADC.”
Dkhar pointed out that the actual composition in the KHADC is that the present ruling ARPA was having a total strength of 15 members while the opposition alliance People’s Democratic Front (PDF) with only 14 members, before the nomination of Wahlang as MDC.
“The act of the government in appointing the nominated member is like suppressing the mandate of the people,” Dkhar stated.
Referring to the case in the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC), Dkhar said the ruling side in the JHADC was allowed to recommend the name of the nominated MDC with an aim to bring further stability in the council.
Dkhar added “It is ironic to say that in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), the situation is just the opposite.”
Dkhar also he would like to seek clarification from the district council affairs minister as to how many times did the state government given a written reminder to the KHADC’s EC on ARPA failure to recommend the name of nominated KHADC MDC.
Dkhar said as per the Autonomous District (AD) Rules, it has clearly spell out that the KHADC shall consists of 29 members which will be elected as per adult suffrage and a nominated MDC to be appointed by the Governor.
Dkhar said that the rules also clearly pointed out that for appointment of a nominated MDC, the district council may submit its recommendation, if so desire, to the Governor.- By Our Reporter
