No confidence against ARPA

SHILLONG, FEB 23: Opposition Congress led Khasi Hills United Democratic Alliance (KHUDA) moved a no-confidence motion (NC) against All Regional Parties Alliance (ARPA) Executive Committee (EC) led by Chief Executive Member (CEM) Adelbert Nongrum for its alleged inefficiency.

The no-confidence motion was admitted by KHADC Chairperson Teilinia Thangkhiew on the first day of the council’s budget session and will be taken up on Tuesday.

Before admitting the no confidence motion, Thangkhiew asked the house who are the members in favour of no-confidence motion.  Opposition MDCs led by their leader P N Syiem stood up to support the NC.

Quoting the rules, Thangkhiew said then said, “Leave is granted to the motion. The motion will be place before the floor of the House tomorrow.”

The opposition stated that they are against the functioning of the present led EC led by Nongrum as they alleged that it has affected the overall wellbeing of the council.

Raising some of the issues, the opposition pointed to pending bills including the Village Administration Bill passed by KHADC earlier, issue relating to the ruling of the Meghalaya High Court on December last year which they alleged affected the traditional heads in the state.

Later, Sohra MDC Donevan Kharwanlang raised a point of order questioning the delay of the present executive committee (EC) in the appointment of the new deputy chairman of the Council.  The post of the deputy chairman is lying vacant soon after the HSPDP MDC from Sohryngkham constituency Pyniaid Sing Syiem decided to quit the post last year.

Thangkhiew, however, rejected the request made by the Sohra MDC and said the point of order cannot be entertain as there was no zero hour notice.- By Our Reporter
