SHILLONG, FEB 9: Meghalaya labour minister Ampareen Lyngdoh said that the labour inspectors appointed by the state government would soon be joining their work from March after completing their training.

Lyngdoh told the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) delegation led by its president Daniel Khyriem, who met her in her office chamber on Monday.

“The minister informed that 23 newly recruited labour inspectors are still undergoing their training and would join their respective offices by March,” Khyriem told reporters after the meeting.  According to him, nine labour inspectors have already joined.

The state government had decided to appoint labour inspectors in all the 39 blocks in the state as part of its exercises to control influx and illegal immigrants entering into the state.

Expressing satisfaction over the initiative taken by the state government, Khyriem said, “We hope with the presence of adequate manpower, the state will be able to effectively implement the Inter-State Migrant Workmen Regulation Act, 2011, which is also designed to curb influx and illegal immigrants from getting a chance to work in the state illegally.”

Khyriem, however, informed that the KSU would also conduct a checking drive to verify the documents of the labourers coming from outside the state and whether they fulfill the rules as laid by the SMWRA 2011 or not.- By Our Reporter
