SHILLONG, JAN 23: Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) chief executive member Adelbert Nongrum appealed to the people to maintain peace and tranquility on the day of his appearance before the Meghalaya high court on contempt case.
“My appearance before the high court should not be a day of creating violence but it is for us to show that we still believe that righteousness will lift up the rights of our indigenous community,” Nongrum said in a statement on Friday.
The Meghalaya high court directed the CEM to appear before the court on January 27 in connection with contempt proceedings drawn against him.
Nongrum statement also came after political party, youth organizations and ngos decided to accompany him on day of his appearance before the court to show their solidarity.
In view of this, the East Khasi Hills district administration also promulgated an order under section 144 CrPC, prohibiting assembly of five or more persons within 500 metres radius of the Meghalaya high court to prevent any possibility of outbreak of law and order.
“My appeal to the public to refrain from violence on that day has been made after receiving information that most of them are agitated on the summon notice issued by the court to me, which has even forced the district administration to imposed prohibitory order,” Nognrum said.
Nongrum appealed to the public to respect law and maintain peace without creating any unwanted incident which could bring shame to upon the indigenous Khasi community.
Nongrum also said he will speak what is truth on the day of his appearance before the court. “I am willing and ready to even tender my apology if there are words that have slip from my side earlier, which might have hurt the judiciary,” he declared.- By Our Reporter
