Police, ultras exchange fire

TURA, JAN 19: Police and A’chik Matgrik Elite Force (AMEF) militants exchange fire at Pakregittim village, near Rongjeng in East Garo hills, about 140 kms on Monday morning. The incident took place around 5:30 am when the East Garo hills and West Khasi hills police launched an operations against the militants who had kidnapped four traders from Mangsang village.

The traders were released yesterday.

Police said that the abduction was led by deputy chief of the outfit Goran. “We had inputs about AMEF rebels presence at Pakregittim village and launched the operation”, said Davies Marak, East Garo hills SP said.

The police team managed to locate the hideout of the outfit at the village. However, they manage to escape taking advantage of the deep jungle. “Exchange of fire lasted for several minutes but the rebels managed to take advantage of the terrain. We found three walkie-talkie, three phones and incriminating documents from the spot”, the SP added.

Police said that about 10-15 militant were taking shelter in the village. “We have arrested a person from the village for harbouring the AMEF rebels”, said Marak.- From Our Correspondent
