NPP lambast govt on relief

SHILLONG, JAN 9: The National People’s Party (NPP) criticized the state government for being slow to provide relief packages to the victims affected by September 24-flood and landslide in Garo Hills region.

“Relief package is still pending and we feel that the government is not doing enough to pursue this matter with the Centre,” NPP spokesperson James K Sangma told reporters at a press conference on Friday.

According to him, the state government had projected some Rs 200 odd crore as relief fund to the victims for restoring back their lives.  “It is the prerogative of the Meghalaya government to pursue this matter at the ministerial level with the centre,” he said.

He, however, said but apparent the absent of ministers and the fact that there is no governance in Meghalaya with the chief minister himself being absent for long period and governance taking a back seat which apparently delays the disbursement of relief package.

He said the NPP demand the state government to take up  the issue of providing relief as an emergency so that people who have suffered due to the flash floods may be compensated and get the reliefs money at the earliest. – By Our Reporter
