SHILLONG, DEC 11: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) has expressed its reservation against NEHU’s notification for implementation of the semester-system at the college level and demanded its ‘modification’.
“We have study the pros and cons of the notification and found out that paragraph 3, is totally against the general welfare and liberty of the students’ community,” HYC CEC general secretary Robertjune Kharjahrin said in a petition to NEHU’s vice chancellor.
The semester system is proposed to be implemented in all the colleges (bachelor degree) in the state affiliated to the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) from next year.
As per paragraph 3 of the notification issued by the Director, College Development Council, NEHU, it stated that “students are eligible to proceed to the next semester course, regardless of passing or failing in any one or more subjects of the first five end semester examination(s).”
“Such candidates will be required to appear and pass the failed subject between 7th and 10th semester or within five year and not during regular semester (ie 3 and 4),” the notification stated.
Kharjahrin said, “This is a disappointment as such decision will affect the students’ fraternity.”
While demanding for its modification, Kharjahrin said the HYC suggest that paragraph 3 be replace with – “Candidates will be required to appear and pass the failed subject between 3rd to 10th semesters or within five years.”
“Students should have the liberty to appear the failed paper at any time during the semester examinations, but it must be in the even semester and odd semester exams for the respective even and odd semester failed paper,” Kharjarin asserted.
Meanwhile, NEHU vice chancellor in-charge Prof B Myrboh expressed his surprise to the HYC objection as he said the notification is yet to get the approval of the Academic Council of NEHU.
Kharjahrin informed that Prof Myrboh said that the NEHU authority has also constituted a committee to look into this matter and is yet to submit the report. He has also assured the delegation that he would look into the matter and ensure the paragraph 3 of the notification is being cancelled, he said.- By Our Reporter
