SHILLONG, NOV 26: Meghalaya deputy chief minister holding education portfolio RC Laloo informed the assembly that 225 Common Service Centres-CSC- were set up across the state to facilitate applying of scholarship online by the students even as he agreed that there were some problems with the new system.

Replying during the question hours raise by UDP legislator Jemino Mawthoh, Laloo said, “I agree there may be problems but the department is trying its best to attend to the needs and interest of the students.” He informed  adequate support system besides setting up of 225 CSCs in different blocks and districts is being provided to students for online registration for scholarship.

Laloo also said that the department is trying to cover every area with the support system that is required and the students from rural areas can also take advantage of the facilities being provided at the block level.

While raising the query Mawthoh said that there are numerous complaints of students having to stand in long queues in cyber cafes for registering their scholarships even as he questioned the computer literacy among students, especially those in rural areas.

Laloo, however, responded by saying that he finds the response of students very encouraging and is even surprise that they have been able to register in large number. Giving details he said, “As of today, a total number of 64, 000 have already registered even though last year about 68, 000 of them had registered.”

Laloo also assured that if there is complaint from any students, the department will surely look address the problem faced by them.  He said, “Though the system is new, but we want to insist the students to learn, to be well verse in the field of computer science.” He informed the last date for online registration is November 30.

Mawthoh further questioned the need to submit affidavit of the income of parent’s during the registration and felt it  is extremely difficult for the students to run around.

Laloo however informed that since the scheme is new, there have been no changes proposed by the centre so far.  According to him, the need to submit the income affidavits is because of the report by the CAG wherein it must be clear the manner in which parents’ incomes are being furnished.

Laloo said as per the centre’s guideline, the income of the parents should be Rs 2.5 lakh per annum.- By Our Reporter
