SHILLONG, NOV 13: Opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) has demanded that the state government deport all “dubious voters” detected by the state election department during the process of the ongoing enrollment drive.
A delegation of the UDP – Shillong city- led by the UDP working president Jemino Mawthoh met East Khasi hills deputy commissioner Sanjay Goyal and urged the district administration to ensure that no illegal voters get enroll in the electoral rolls of the state.
“We demand the government to take pro-active steps to see that the dubious voters are deported to their respective places which will ensure they do not get enrolled in the electoral roll of the state through illegal means,” Mawthoh told reporters after the meeting.
He also said, “Even the district administration did admit that there are many applicants whose credentials are doubtful and their applications for enrollment were rejected.”
According to him, the issue is a matter of serious concern for the party after many traditional institutions and concern citizens from different parts of the district have expressed their apprehensions and fear that there is possibility of illegal immigrants getting enroll in the electoral rolls.
“The issue of illegal immigration and influx in the state is a major concern where political parties and ngos have raised from time to time,” he said.
On being asked what are the other legal action required to be taken after detecting such illegal voters, he said, “Now, the responsibility lies with the state government to take necessary action including legal and sent them back to their places.”
He further appeal to all the traditional bodies, ngos and people of the state to actively participate in the hearing conducted related to the enrollment process.
He said,“If they (traditional bodies, NGO, others) feel that the antecedents of any persons is doubtful, they should not hesitate to raise objection because there is no legal binding on such matter.”
Stating that the UDP is not against genuine Indian citizens, he said, “The issue is being raised to ensure that the political rights of the people of the state are not affected by such illegal immigration.”- By Our Reporter
