Night blockade in WJH

SHILLONG, NOV 12: The Jaintia Students’ Movement (JSM) and Jaintia Youth Federation (JYF) have called for a two-day night road-blockade in East Jaintia hills district on November 19 – 20 to protest against the MeECL failure to provide adequate power supply.

The night road-blockade will start from 7 pm to 5 am on November 19 and 20, the two organizations said in a joint statement issued on Wednesday.

The organisations said the decision to call for a road blockade came after the failure of the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) to address the problem of irregularity in the power supply to hundreds of villages under the district despite repeated requests made on several occasions.

“This has cause great inconvenience to the school students who are preparing for their annual examinations which are going to start by this month,” the organization  said.  They also informed that the officials of the MeECL said that they had detected the problem on the barel machine which had led to frequent power shut down in the district.

“Despite of such excuses, the public of the district continue to pay exorbitant and abnormal electricity bills which is not at all acceptable,” the leaders stated.  The organisations said they demand the MeECL to immediate address the problems, failing which they will have to intensify their agitations.

The JSM and JYF also said that media and ambulances are exempted from the night road blockade.- By Our Reporter
