SHILLONG, NOV 1: The nephew of the Meghalaya health minister AL Hek along with four others were arrested and produced in court by police on Saturday for their alleged involvement in assaulting a senior journalist on Thursday night.
The court has remanded the five accused to five days police custody, East Khasi Hills SP M Kharkrang informed reporters onn Saturday.
The accused have been identified as Sunshine Khongwir (33) of Golflink Mawpun Raju Jyrwa (26) of Golflink, Sandeep Chetri (27) of Nongmynsong, Henry Jamatia (26) of Rynjah and Raju Jamatia (31) of Lapalang.
They have booked under sections 324 and 341/34 of the Indian Penal Code.
Police are now on the lookout for other persons who are allegedly involved in the incident.
On Thursday at around 10:00 pm when Sameer Sohliya, a senior staff correspondent with The Sentinel was on his way back home from his duty. According to an FIR filed with Sadar Police Station, Sohliya came across an incident where two friends were being assaulted by a group of unidentified persons. While trying to intervene Sohliya was also beaten up.
“The said persons attacked me and my friends with bricks, smashing my helmet and injuring me,” the FIR stated.
The incident took place a few yards away from Taraghar near the Botanical Gardens.
“Had it not been for alert guards posted in Taraghar who immediately informed the police Control Room, which dispatched a mobile patrol to the spot, I fear matters could have been worse,” Sohliya stated in the FIR.
The assailants were in a white colour special commercial taxi (ML-05K-7554) as well as two-wheelers, the FIR elaborated.
According to Sohiliya the perpetrators, while assaulting, kept on stating, “You think you’re tough because you are press. See what will happen to you now.”
Meanwhile, the Shillong Press Club welcomed the prompt response of police in tracking the persons involved in the brutal assault of one of its senior members. Expressing hope that the provisions of the law will prevail, the SPC also calls upon all citizens to ensure that peace prevails.- By Our Reporter
