TURA, OCT 21: Five Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militants on Tuesday surrendered before Meghalaya police at Bajengdoba police station in East Garo hills district.
The militants laid down their arms and ammunition before East Garo hills SP Jerry Marak. The arms and ammunition includes a US carbine, two magazines, 100 rounds ammunition, two 7.65 pistol with magazine, wireless set, among others.
The militants have been identified as – Tengbarth Marak, 20, Griksang B. Marak alias Katnap, 19, Chanang K Marak alias Rasong, 21, Loban M. Sangma, 19 and Nikrak M. Sangma alias Mikjan, 19.
In the last three week, at least 15 GNLA militants have surrendered in different districts of Garo hills. Militants of other outfits like ASAK and AMEF have also followed suit.
Police claim that ongoing operation against insurgent outfits has forced many to come forward to surrender.
In West Garo hills, police today picked up a lady for giving shelter to GNLA militants from Chisakgre village, near Baromile – Dalu route, about 20 km from Tura.
The lady was picked up as her husband Sengram Marak had gone missing after an exchange of fire between GNLA and the police yesterday evening.
From the house police recovered one 7.65 pistol, one shotgun with ammunition. “The militants escaped in the ensuing gun battle. The operation is still on in the area”, said West Garo hills SP Mukesh Singh.- From Our Correspondent
