HNLC calls 24-hrs bandh

SHILLONG, SEPT 26: The proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) on Friday announced a 24-hour ‘total-shutdown’ from October 1 to October 2 to protest against the firing incident killing two civilians in East Jaintia Hills District and the brutal murder of student Banker Passah in Karnataka.

The bandh will be effective in the six districts of Khasi and Jaintia Hills region from October 1 6 pm to 6 pm the next day, HNLC publicity secretary Sainkupar Nongtraw said in a statement issued on Friday.

Nongtraw  said, “We have decided to call the bandh to protest against the alleged police firing which led to death of two civilians in Jaintia hills.”

The two persons including a woman were shot dead while five others were injured when para military personnel allegedly opened fired at a mob of five hundred crowds at Mookhep village in East Jaintia Hills District.

A magisterial inquiry has been set up by the State government to probe into the incident of which report has been directed to be submitted within  a month’s time.

“The state government should not only extend ex-gratia relief to the bereaved families of the deceased but should ensure that justice is delivered to them by arresting and punish the perpetrators behind the criminal act against civilians,” Nongtraw said.

Nongtraw also said, “The outfit also strongly protests the recent brutal killing of a student from Jowai, Banker Passah in Karnataka.”

23 year old Passah who hails from Chilliangraij locality in Jowai and a student of final year of Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery (BMHS) at Dr. B D Jatti Homeopathic Medical College, in Karnataka was found murdered.

“This is not new as our people are being made victim of various atrocities outside the state,” Nongtraw  said adding “It is time that we change our mentality of feeling that we are minority in front of the other states of India.”

The HNLC has also said it has decided to call for a total boycott of the celebration of International Day of Non-Violence on October 2, the day when the country observed the birth anniversary of the father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi.

People attending religious festival, church, hospital and media are exempted from the bandh, Nongtraw informed.- By Our Reporter
