MIPRL demands inquiry

SHILLONG, SEPT 24: The Movement for Indigenous Peoples ‘  Rights and Livelihood –Meghalaya  (MIPRL) who had given the call for indefinite economic blockaded demanded judicial enquiry into the death of two persons who were shot at Mookhep village on Wednesday during the ongoing agitation.

While the police claimed the shooters are yet to be identified, the movement alleged that the police are behind the firing against the crowd which also resulted in the to injury of five others.

“We views this action as a violation of the law and demands a judicial enquiry into the matter and responsibility be fixed,” MIPRL vice chairman Erwin K Sutnga said in a statement issued immediately after the incident on Wednesday.

“The acts of unprovoked firing by the police on an unarmed crowd who had come out to go to the Lad Rymbai Thana because of the arrest of some person is to be condemned since this has resulted in the death of two persons, a lady and a youth Setly Phawa and Dinesh Siangshai and injury to many innocent people including a 13 year old boy,” Sutnga said.

Sutnga claimed that on enquiry from the ADM of Khliehriat C Laloo, it was learnt that there was no order to fire.

“It has also been learnt that other crowd control measures like order to disperse, tear gas and lathi charge were not used,” Sutnga claimed while expressing deep condolences to the bereaved families.

MIPRL requests the people of Jaintia hills to maintain peace and calm so that a solution can be worked out. It also appealed that the people should not be persuaded by anti social elements or provoked by any element.

The MIPRL also blamed the Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) of East Jaintia hills district for manhandled a youth leading to Tuesday’s violence at Wapungskur village.- By Our Reporter
