Let us introspect: Laloo

SHILLONG, SEPT 5: Meghalaya deputy chief minister RC Laloo, who holds education portfolio, on Friday emphasized on the need to ‘introspect’ on how to promote and improve the quality of education and its system in the state.

“Let us introspect! Collectively and judiciously! What the state can do or cannot do… What is the role of the citizens, parents, teachers, students to uplift education in the state,” Laloo said.

Addressing a government function organized to celebrate the Teacher’s Day at U Soso Tham auditorium on Friday he said where Meghalaya does stands in its 42 years of statehood. He said, “Many has achieve the unachievable but where do we placed the credit… Education system or endurance? However, where do we place the blame for those who are unachievable-under achievers-drop outs?”

According to Laloo in today’s time pointing fingers at the government is no longer relevant and conceivable. He instead said it is the time that everyone collectively point at each other.

Laloo further stated that the state government is neither sitting with clasp hands nor soft cushioning its position to impede pending issues. He, however, added “We are weighing our abilities to ensure that education is pierce into the right direction with the right and appropriate resources.”

Informing that a report on the study on the provincialization of schools has been submitted to the government, Laloo said, “A higher level committee has to examine the paper before making any recommendations.”

Laloo, however, informed that the government is on the process of provincialization of deficit schools that are willing to hand over the reins without any pre-conditions.

To make education accessible in rural areas, Laloo said that the government has earmarked to set up a total of 20 rural hostels and said tender for the purpose has been issued.

Laloo also informed that the scheme under the Asian Development Bank (ADB) aims at improvement of government aided infrastructure, teacher training, skill development and others.

“The core objective is to prepare students of secondary and higher secondary level to get access to state of the art infrastructure facilities with capable faculties to lead them to the world of work,” Laloo underlined.

Laloo also announced the introduction of a constructive programme under Sakshar Bharat (Adult Literacy Programme) in several educational backward districts in Garo Hills by the Directorate of School Education and Literacy (DSEL). “Over 6000 out of 10600 adult learners have cleared the examination conducted by DSEL under the programme upon which certificates would soon be issued,” he informed.

Laloo further informed that the government has also established and upgraded five higher secondary schools including science subjects in all these schools.On the issue of adhoc system, he said the adhoc grant in aid eligible schools are under government consideration for due approval.

Earlier, Laloo also felicitated all the 44 teachers who are the recipients of the state and district awards given in recognition of their contribution to the field of education.

Out of 44, 11 teachers from different schools of the state were honored with the State Award 2014 while 33 were recipients of the district award.- By Our Reporter
