SHILLONG, AUG 12: Zero Littering Crusaders Rally on the theme “Let’s make Shillong Litter- Free, Clean and Green” was undertaken on Tuesday by about 1200 students drawn from 70 schools in Shillong to sensitize the people of Shillong and motivate the children for greater participation in the important task of helping the city improve in cleanliness.
The rally was organized by East Khasi Hills deputy commissioner’s office along with North Eastern Region Capital Cities Development Investment Programme (NERCCDIP), State Investment Project Management Consultant & Implementation Unit (SIPMIU) and Urban Affairs department, at U Soso Tham auditorium.
Urban affairs minister Ampareen Lyngdoh graced the programme as the chief guest in the presence ofSanjay Goyal, Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills, E Kharmalki, CEO, Shillong Municipal Board, B. Dutta, and director Urban Affairs among others.
It may be mentioned that 93 schools and 5 colleges are part of the zero litter campaign for Shillong city. 40 schools in the city have adopted roads, lanes and park to mind and maintain a zero littering through intensive campaign, signboards and occasional cleaning drives. So far 5 schools have conducted one day exposure tour for students by visiting waste dumping ground at Marten in Mawiong, green parks and Mawlynnong village.
Prizes were also distributed by the chief guest and others dignitaries to the winners of the slogan, painting, drawing and essay competitions which was organized as part of the zero litter campaign. Later Sanjay Goyal, Deputy Commissioner administers the pledge for a zero littering lifestyle.- By Our Reporter
