SHILLONG, JUNE 30: To check inflow of illegal migrant labourers, KHADC will soon conduct a surprise inspection in companies including in construction work operating within its jurisdiction and take action against those who failed to obtain labour license while employing labourers.
KHADC EM in-charge labour James Ban Basaiawmoit informed this while replying to queries raised by members of the opposition during the budget session on Monday.
Earlier, MDC James Sylliang said most of the labourers employed by companies from outside does not even know what a labour’s license is, while opposition leader PN Syiem stressed on the need to conduct spot inspection and ensure that those labourers who failed to obtain labour license should not be allowed to work.
Basaiawmoit said KHADC will conduct the inspection keeping in mind the role, support and cooperation of the traditional institutions on such issue He informed, “The department has also issue notices to all the traditional institutions to verify and check that the labourers working under their respective jurisdictions are having necessary labour licenses and if not, to report the matter to the council.”
According to Basaiawmoit the notices to the traditional institutions were being issued as the council’s enforcement wing is facing shortage of manpower. On the number of labour license issued by KHADC , he said 183 labour licenses were issued out of 382 approved by the council from April 1 till June adding out of these, around 90 were rejected due to the failure of the applicants to produce valid documents.
Basaiawmoit also said of the 3086 forms taken, only 472 have been submitted for obtaining of labour license.- By Our Reporter
