SHILLONG, JUNE 25: Denied admission to over 200 students by Kiang Nongbah Government College (KNGC) in Jowai, West Jaintia hills district the Joint Action Committee of Jaintia Organization (JACJO) has serve ten-day deadline to the college to absorb them even as the organization has demanded setting up of one more government college to address the admission problem.
Joint Action Committee of Jaintia Organization (JACJO) secreyary D Wanmi Laloo told reporters at a news conference on Wednesday,“ We demanded that the Kiang Nangbah Government College (KNGC) to absorb all the 200 aggrieved students within 10 days, failing which we will be compelled to resort to strong agitations.” .
The aggrieved students include those applying for admissions for session 2014-15 in class XI and first year degree. The KNGC is also the only government college catering to the educational needs and interest of the students from East and West Jaintia Hills Districts.
Laloo informed that when enquiry was made from acting principal of the college on the reasons for denial of admission to around 200 students, she claimed that the college was already congested adding “We cannot accept such excuses since most of the students from the region especially those from poor family background cannot afford to go private colleges as it is too expensive for them.”
Expressing concern over the attitude of the KNGC in depriving the rights of the students to be admitted, Laloo revealed, “As per an RTI report from the college, the college has given admission to more than 800 students in 11th ( Arts) stream, while this year it has taken only 303 students. Similarly in the first year degree around 530 were given admission and only 409 were admitted this year.” He therefore questioned by saying where does congestion arise.
Laloo said the decision by the acting principal is highly objectionably, unacceptable and is against the rights of the students especially those who cannot afford expensive education in private colleges. He also informed that the committee has also sought the intervention of the Director of Higher and Technical Education (DHTE) to ensure that the interest of the students’ community is not hampered.
The committee is also demanding setting up of one more full-fledged government college in East Jaintia hills. Laloo said the government should set up one more government college in East Jaintia Hills so that the poor and the needy from that district will be able to continue their studies there itself and this will also be a permanent solution to admission problem faced by the students in the region.
Laloo also informed that the committee has urged the government to improve the infrastructural set up of the KNGC by extending the existing building to avoid the admission problem and thereby preventing students from dropping out of their studies. He added by saying that there is also a need to appoint more teachers in the college.- By Our Reporter
