SHILLONG, JUNE 9: Opposition accused the Congress led Meghalaya United Alliance (MUA-II) government of being least bothered to address the deteriorating law and order situation even as NPP legislator James K Sangma dubbed chief minister Mukul Sangma as “James Bond” for using women police as ring round during his visit to militancy-infested region of Garo Hills.

James said during the reassembled budget session on Monday that the government’s has not heard of how this state government will tackle militancy problems in Garo hills.

Participating during the budget discussion, James said the government in just in three paragraphs line on the law and order situation only mentioned about raising a Special Force – 10. He opined that with the mention of this the government expects to instill a sense of security in the people. He said, “This only show that the state government is least bother to solve the problem.

Saying that the law and order situation in Garo hills is not only going from bad to worse but there is no amount of remedy to solve the problem, James said, “We are bombarded by news everyday where people are being killed, demand notes being served and kidnapped which leads to lots of insecurity feelings,” Sangma said.

Quoting from the budget speech of the government which stated – “It makes eminent sense to spend more on maintenance of law and order so that development can take place,” James said, “Does this means that the government need to spend more on the chief minister as 200 police personnel were deployed along the route where the chief minister during his visit to Garo Hills.”

James said he was surprised that during the last parliamentary elections, the chief minister’s ring-round was an all women police which according to him is “unprecedented.” He sarcastically said “I thought my name is James, I think the title “James Bond” should be given to the chief minister, always having women police surrounding him.”

Taking part in the discussion the Hill State People Democratic Party (HSPDP) vice president Ardent Basaiawmoit demanded that the state government must come clean with regards to the alleged politician-militant nexus.

Basaiawmoit said, “Am in pain as there are many allegations that politicians especially during elections are using the services of the militant groups. He said that if the allegations turn out to be true, politicians will have to hang their heads in shame. Therefore, he said  as a public representative, he demands that  the government come up clean

Basaiawmoit also said that the horrific killing of a woman by a militant outfit in South Garo hills district has earned bad name for the state.

Opposition leader and UDP president Donkupar Roy felt that besides augmenting and modernizing police organisation, the government must take the initiative to garner public support to fight militants and terrorists operating in the Garo hills region.

Roy said that  if  the government gets public support, no militant groups can grown in the state but with such support it will be difficult for the state government to fight this menace.- By Our Reporter
