SHILLONG, JUNE 5: While the state cabinet approved expost-facto for the dissolution of the controversial and discredited CMJ University, it also approved the proposals for amending the Martin Luther Christian University (MLCU) Act, 2005 and for provincialisation of Tirot Sing Memorial Secondary School, Laitumsaw.

The dissolution of the CMJ University came after it was found selling fake PhD degrees to thousands of students all over the country.

Meghalaya education minister RC Laloo said, “The cabinet has approved expost facto for the dissolution of the CMJ University as per the Supreme Court directive to take appropriate action under Section 48 of the CMJ University Act, 2009.”

Last year the state government had decided to dissolve the CMJ University based on the recommendation of the then governor Ranjit Shekhar Mooshahary, who had filed an FIR against the CMJ University and its chancellor CM Jha for awarding fake degrees. Jha was arrested on April 22 from Bihar but on Wednesday he was granted bail by the Meghalaya high court.

Jha founded the first self financed university in Meghalaya, the CMJ University, by a legislation of the state government in 2009.

The CMJ University allegedly awarded a record number of 434 fake PhD degrees during the period between 2012 and 2013 apart from registering 490 more PhD scholars during the same year in violation of the UGC norms.

With regards to the MLCU and Tirot Sing Memorial Secondary School in Laitumsaw, Laloo informed,  “We decided to amend the MLCU Act, 2005 for disassociating the Khasi-Jaintia Presbyterian Assembly from the university as the co-sponsor of the university.”

Laloo  informed the decision regarding the MLCU was taken after a request from the KJP Assembly.  He informed that the proposed amendment of the act would be taken up during the extended budget session of the government slated to begin from Friday.

Laloo while informing the cabinet decision to provincialise the Tirot Sing Memorial Secondary School, Laitumsaw also said the government has also decided to regularize the posts of seven teachers, one head teacher and one non-teaching staff of the school.- By Our Reporter

These politicians should be hauled up for allowing even MLCU where CBI inquiry is going on. They do not also have UGC Clearance. and they cannot just amend as they wish, without taking public opinion. Should also be hauled up for allowing other universities to mushroom from rented rooms…The Government should in fact be setting up their own University…
