TURA, MAY 27: The Food Corporation of India (FCI) godown in Williamnagar has shut down after employees of the depot were served demand notes by militant groups. The shutdown began on May 20 and this has threatened to affect the supply of rice in the region
East Garo hills deputy commissioner Vijay K Mantri confirmed the receipt of demand notes by the FCI workers and assured that everything was being done to ensure the safety of the people working in the FCI.
Mantri said, “We have promised security to the FCI team with round the clock vigilance from the CRPF and the police team. The SP has also been directed and has confirmed the extra security coverage to the godown.” He hoped that the employees will report to work after the assurances.
Mantri informed that currently there is no lifting of rice as the month’s provisions is yet to arrive. He said as soon as the lifting is done the administration will ensure that the supply is normally. ”
Meanwhile, some of the wholesalers and ration shops have already got into panic mode. One of the wholesalers, who is supposed to pick up about 192 quintals of rice for the month to supply in the Rongjeng, Songsak and Williamnagar areas said, “I was supposed to pick up my lot and had even cut my receipt for the same on the 19th and found the godown shut down”.
Mantri also added that it was not only the FCI godown workers but almost all shops in the town that were served with demand notes. – By Our Reporter
