Admission to local: KSU

SHILLONG, MAY 30: Khasi Students Union (KSU) Friday demanded that the state government must put some “restrictions” on all educational institutions, be it government aided or private, on the issue of admission and fees to the students of the region.

KSU general secretary Auguster Jyrwa said, “We demand that the state government must come up with some sort of restrictions on all education institutions on the issue of admission and fees so that students of the region are not subjected to any kind of deprivation or unnecessary harassment.”

The demand came following complaints from aggrieved parents and students’ community on the system of admission and fees structures adopted by some educational institutions.

Jyrwa said there are instances where some institutions conducted spot admission and directed the students to pay the fee immediately which is something that needs to be looked into because institutions should also have some consideration on the economic background of the people.

With the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBoSE) declared the results of the different examinations including secondary school leaving certificate (SSLC) and higher secondary school leaving certificate (HSSLC) and students are rushing to seek admission in the various educational institutions for further studies.

According to Jyrwa, there is a need to streamline issues concerning the welfare and interest of the students’ community especially those coming from poor family background.  He alleged the union has received complaints that some of the top institutions have refused to give admission to students with not so high grade which is a concerns to the union.

The KSU also demanded that educational institutions in the state must first give preference to local students while conducting their admission drives.

“All educational institutions are demanded to give first preferences to our local boys and girls before entertaining those coming from other states,” Jyrwa said.

Stating that KSU has its own education cell to cater to such issues concerning the students, Jyrwa also urged aggrieved parents and students to come to the union if they have any grievances regarding such issues.  He said students who are deprived admission can come with their mark-sheets to the office of the union.- By Our Reporter
