TURA, MAY 6: Angry mob killed two known criminals and grievously injured another in a village called Patakata, under the South Salmara thana in Assam Meghalaya border close to Rajabala in Garo hills.
The incident took place on Monday at about 12 midnight.
Police said the three known criminals , who were involved in number of criminal cases like kidnapping and murder in border region, had gone to Patakata with the intention to either kidnap or kill the the Patakata VEC general secretary Abdul Aziz after he had refused to pay the demand of Rs 5 lakhs made by the three.
Incidentally, the villagers of that village were holding a meeting at that time when the three barged and demanded to know the whereabouts of Aziz. Sensing trouble the villagers surrounded the three and gave them a thrashing killing one of them identified as Abul Kalam Azad.
Azad had been in the news recently for escaping from police custody in Phulbari last year. He was however caught later in a case relating to kidnapping and murder of a local businessman from Bhaitbari in the West Garo hill plain belt area.
After the thrashing that killed Azad, the police were informed who rushed to the spot and rescued the remaining two. They were taken to the South Salmara PHC where the second criminal identified as Sohidul Islam) succumbed to the injury.
The third criminal Rahid Miah is said to be critical condition and has been transferred to Dhubri for further treatment. The police team also recovered two hand-made pistols from the spot.- By Our Reporter
