SHILLONG, MAY 1: Along with the rest of the country May Day was also observed in Meghalaya even as the Meghalaya Joint Council of Trade Unions and Associations (MJCTUA) resolved to fight and end the regime of exploitation of man by man.
During the MJCTUA meeting on Thursday, its president GL Das read out the May Day declaration 2014 adopted by the association and said soaring unemployment and job losses have become the order of the day with drastic cut in wages and social security benefits.
Pointing out that labour laws which are supposed to give some minimal protection to the labour are being trampled with the patronization of enforcement authority. He said the trade union rights are under brutal attack from the combine force of the employers-government in most of the workplaces, particularly in private corporate sector, both domestic and foreign.
Prices of essentials including food-items have been continuously rising which is further get compounded by frequent hikes in prices of fuels, Das alleged that it gets even worse by rampant corruptions at all levels. He was of the opinion that price-rise is artificial as those in government make it happen to benefit the corporate speculators in commodity market.
Stating that situation needs to be reversed, Das said, “It is the working class who has to lead from the front for reversal of the dismal situation.” He was of the opinion that with the country now in election mode, the working class must take this opportunity to defeat the agents of capitalist class as well as the communal forces and struggle for establishing a government that upholds the democratic norms and works with pro-people agenda for creation of a scientific – socialistic society.
The association also demanded declaring May 1 every year as paid holiday. – By Our Reporter
