NESO bandh total, except in Jowai proper

 

Shillong, Sept 6: The twelve hours NESO bandh in Meghalaya was peaceful and complete except in Jowai proper where attendance was recorded at 62 percent in government offices and eighty percent in the Jaintia hills deputy commissioner’s office.

Business establishments, banks, education institutions closed their shutters in response to the NESO bandh call.  Streets wore a deserted look as vehicles kept off the road.The Khasi Students Union (KSU) is part of NESO and the Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) and some other ngos are supporting the bandh call.

All the states in the north east, except Assam where a public rally was  held to demand immediate deportation of illegal Bangladeshi migrants , the bandh was successful.

Despite arrangement of transportations by the district administration in Shillong for office goers, the government servants decided to stay at home. However, the second day of the Meghalaya assembly autumn session functioned normally.

In Assam, the rally by the NESO was held at Lapasil playground in Guwahati and about twenty-five thousands crowd gathered. A four kilometer procession was also taken out in support of the demands of the NESO to immediately deport illegal Bangladeshis, seal the international border and provide security to the students and people of north east origin working and studying outside the states.

Leaders of student organizations from different north eastern states were present. Student bodies from Assam, Mizoram, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Tripura and about twenty-five ethnic student bodies from Assam were present during the rally.

In Shillong, government offices wore a deserted look and East Khasi hills deputy commissioner Sanjay Goel informed that the office attendance was very low putting the percentage between 5 to 10 percent. Even in the deputy commissioner office, the attendance was negligible. 

However, Jaintia Hills deputy commissioner PS Dkhar informed that office attendance in Jowai proper was around 62 percent and in his office it was 80 percent. He, however, said that business establishment, banks and market were all closed and vehicles were off the road.

In West Garo hills, deputy commissioner Pravin Bakshi also informed that attendance in all government offices were negligible. He said, “There is no vehicular movement in the town and markets, educational institutions and banks are closed.” He said the bandh was peaceful as he had not received any report of incident from any part of his district.

West Khasi hills and Ri-Bhoi districts deputy commissioners also said that office attendances in their districts were negligible with most government officials preferring to stay indoors.  Market, business establishments, educational institutions and banks were all close in response to the bandh call. Till late Wednesday afternoon, all the districts reported a peaceful bandh
