SHILLONG, MAR 17: Irked at the government’s inaction to repair the dilapidated NH-44, several pressure groups along with the traditional heads on Monday called for two-day night-road blockade in East Jaintia Hills district March 20 and 21.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the five groups – Khasi Students Union – Jaintia Hills District Unit (KSU-JHDU), All Jaintia Youth Welfare Organization (AJYWO), Hynniewtrep National Youth Front – East Jaintia Zone (HNYF-EJZ), Federation of Khasi Jaintia & Garo People – Khliehriat Circle (FKJGP-KC) and Synjuk ki Rangbah Shnong – East Jaintia Hills (SRS-EJH) held on Monday.
The 7 pm to 5 am road blockade on March 20 and 21 will be effective in the entire East Jaintia Hills district from Tuber-Sohshrieh area to Malidor, KSU-JHDU general secretary SS Niangti said in a statement.
“The decision taken is to protest against the adamant attitude and failure of the state government and National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) to repair the dilapidated National Highway – 44 even after repeated requests were made,” Niangti said.- By Our Reporter
