SHILLONG, MAR 17: Football crazy Meghalaya will soon see the Meghalaya Football Players’ Association (MFPA) tapping the football talents in the state by organizing series of football tournaments for selection of players who will represent the state in the upcoming U-17 FIFA world cup tourney to be held in India in 2017.
The decision was taken at the MFPA general council body meeting on Monday.
MFPA general secretary W Kharkhrang told reporters at a news conference after the meeting, “We are planning to hold football tournaments for different categories viz U-14, U-15 and U-16 which kick start tentatively from May this year, with an aim to prepare our young talented players for the upcoming world cup tourney to be held in India,”
According to Kharkhrang, the tournaments will be held in a phase manner starting with the U-14 category. He said the dates for holding the tournaments will be decided and announced soon.
Stating that there is lot of potentials in the youths, Kharkhrang said the MFPA also aims at encouraging the talented youths, especially those coming rural areas, to come forward and participate in the tournament.
Kharkhrang informed that the association’s main objective is to promote talented youths of the state and felt that due to lack of guidance most of the football talents are wasted.
Kharkhrang said,“We also appeal to former state’s players to come forward to associate themselves with association to help in identifying and provide necessary guidance to such talented youths.
Earlier, the MFPA elected its new office bearers with S Nongrum as president, P Warjri and R Nongneng as vice presidents, W Kharkrang as secretary, M Marbaniang and M Khyriem as joint secretaries, F Kharphran as treasurer, S Dey as publicity secretary, R Lyngdoh as social secretary besides four executive members.- By Our Reporter
