SHILLONG, FEB 26: Thousands of Catholic faithful, including students drawn from the different districts of the Khasi-Jaintia hills, converged for a prayer meeting for His Holiness Pope Francis in Shillong on Wednesday.
Organized by the Catholic Pastorial Parish Council and the Catholic Association of Khasi-Jaintia Hills, the prayer meeting was held at the Shillong Cathedral at Laitumkhrah. The meeting was called to express concern over misreporting by one of the newspapers over the Pope.
As a mark of solidarity, hundreds of schools, colleges and educational institutions of the church in the six districts of Khasi-Jaintia Hills region remained closed o Wednesday.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Bishop of Nongstoin Victor Lyngdoh said, “The news report is completely false which has greatly hurt the sentiments of our people.”He said the Catholic faithful decided to converged to pray for peace and harmony .
Lyngdoh said, “We would also like to convey message to the editors and writers to please ensure that reports should be based on facts and truth.” He, however, said that they are not condemning anybody but it is the report that they are concern.
Lyngdoh said that the Catholic faithful felt that such report, which is false, has touch and hurt the sentiments of the people and requested such reports should not be repeated in future.
Lyngdoh also informed that all educational institutions in different districts remain closed on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, a signature campaign was also organized from Wednesday that would conclude on March 2.
We are targeting about one lakh participants in the signature campaign which will be held in the different places of Khasi-Jaintia region, Fr Richard Majaw told reporters.- By Our Reporter
