Probe against JHADC CEM

SHILLONG, FEB 15: West Jaintia Hills police are probing into the ‘twin-scam’ unearthed by the Right to Information (RTI) reports against the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) chief executive member Madonbai Rymbai.

“An inquiry has been instituted and a thorough investigation into the alleged scam in the JHADC is on,” West Jaintia hills SP Herbert G Lyngdoh told this website on Saturday.

The investigation will be conducted on the basis of the two FIRs registered with by the police in connection to the land compensation scam at Khliehtyrshi and another in connection with the JHADC scam.

An RTI filed by one Arlin Dkhar from Khliehtyrshi village has exposed misappropriation of Rs 1.18 crore by the CEM of JHADC. According to the RTI report, the Rs 1.18 crore which includes discretionary grant of Rs 66 lakh and gratuity relief of 52.50  lakhs was released to the CEM during May – December 2013.

In another similar scam unearthed by RTI, three RTI activists from Khliehtyrshi filed an FIR against JHADC CEM  for misappropriation of Rs 1.15 crore released by the state government for land acquisition for the implementation of the proposed Jowai bye pass and forgery of land documents belonging to the Lumpohsiej locality in Khliehtyrshi village.

The inquiry will be headed by the Deputy Superintendent of Police (Dy.SP) and a circle Inspector, Lyngdoh said while informing there is no deadline to submit the report since the investigation will require more time.

The police have seized documents relating to the gratuity relief from the finance secretary of the JHADC.

“We have seized huge chunk of documents of the JHADC related to the gratuity relief released to 94 beneficiaries and we are in the process of examining them,” Lyngdoh informed. He added that the papers would also be forwarded for Forensic Laboratory (FSL) for examination. “We are building up the evidences on the two cases and the law will take its own course,” he assured.

Earlier, many FIRs were filed by the deprived beneficiaries against the CEM of the JHADC even as several ngos from the region have demanded the immediate arrest of the JHADC’s chief and his punishment as per law of the land for the scam.- By Our Reporter
