SHILLONG, JAN 30: Meghalaya deputy chief minister Rowel Lyngdoh said that “facts” are one of the most important aspects of reporting in journalism. He said journalism is not only about reporting incidents, events and providing information but also about authentic and factual reporting.

Speaking on the silver jubilee celebration of the Khasi daily Mawphor on Thursday at Dinam hall, Lyngdoh pointed instances where newspapers indulge in sensationism creating confusion in readers mind instead of informing them about facts.

Former chief minister ad MPCC president DD Lapang and UDP working president Paul Lyngdoh were also present on the occasion.

Lyngdoh said, “Sensationalizing reports besides character assassination should not be encouraged as journalism should be more of a constructive activity than a destructive one.”

Congratulating the language daily for the endless services it has put in its twenty-five years of journey, Lyngdoh said, “Mawphor has contributed a lot to the society and reached out to most remote areas of the state connecting the government and the people.”

The Meghalaya Information & Public Relations minister AL Hek who was also present during the anniversary celebration said, “A newspaper is the mirror of the society and it has a huge responsibility towards uplifting the society.”

Earlier, Mawphor’s publisher RM Marwein gave a brief introductory on the journey of the newspaper since the time it was established. He said the name Mawphor means the monoliths which symbolized the tradition and culture of the indigenous Khasi people.- By Our Reporter
