Combat training for girls to ward off violence

combatSHILLONG, JAN 15: To combat the increasing violence against women in the state, the Meghalaya Civil Defence and Home Guards department has decided to provide combat training to the girls and women in the state. The department felt that equipping the girls and women with self defence will help them to ward off sexual assaults and violence.

Meghalaya Director General (Civil Defence & Home Guards) Kulbir Krishan  told this website that the department will provide self defence and unarmed combat training to at least thirty girls initially. He said the training will provide self confidence in women and also help in fighting off the crime against women in the state as well as other states when they travel.

Pointing out that the training would improve the confidence level in women to defend themselves in times of such unwanted situation,  Krishan  said that similar training is being provided in other states of the country as well . The training will be provided in the headquarters of  Civil Defence and Home Guards at Mawdiandiang.

The training was slated to start much earlier but the ILP agitation forced its delay since all the resources of the home guards had to be given to state police.

Krishan also expressed happiness over the massive response to the proposed training as many young girls have come forward to be a part of the training. Initially, the department  plan to conduct one course but depending on the demand it might conduct 2-3 such trainings.- By Our Reporter
