SHILLONG, JAN 10: Meghalaya governor KK Paul has given his assent to the delimitation of constituencies’ bills passed by the KHADC and JHADC. Now the upcoming district council elections in the two districts will be held under the delimitation of constituencies.
Paul’s approval came following the cabinet’s nod to the bills passed by the KHADC and the JHADC. The governor gave his assent on Thursday evening..
The KHADC and JHADC have 29 MDCs each with a provision to nominate one member to complete the 30-member Houses.
Now with Paul giving the assent to the delimitation bills, , the two councils are allowed to conduct the MDC elections as per the new delimited constituencies.
However it is worth reminding that a writ petition was recently filed by over 100 traditional chiefs along with several ngos from Jaintia hills region in the court of the Meghalaya high court chief justice challenging the delimitation of bill passed by the JHADC. The petition has sought the high court’s intervention to stop from holding election according to the new delimited of constituencies.
The court has fixed January 14 as the date of hearing on the petition.
The state district council affairs department had intimated to the KHADC and JHADC and deputy commissioners about the approval given by Paul, official sources said.
The deputy commissioners will now have to prepare the electoral rolls as per the realigned constituencies.
The cabinet recently had also extended the tenure of the KHADC and JHADC by 15 days while that of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) by six months.
The polls to the KHADC and JHADC will be held on February 24 while the counting of votes will take place on February 27. – By Our Reporter
