Flood flurry worries villagers

SHILLONG, JAN 10: Villagers of Balat village living across the Umngi river are once again gripped with the fear that once the rainy season start there houses and properties will be washed away by the river which roars out of its limit flooding the whole village. Shnong Balat secretary Koiland K Dewsaw said that the villages across the river have been subjected to such ferocious flooding during the eight years destroying the villages and dislocating hundreds of families..

Dewsaw  said that all the affected people in the villages have now move to other villages. He informed that even school buildings.  Angandwadi centre and playgrounds have been washed away in the earlier flooding.

Dewsaw said though officials from Bramhaputra Board have come up there to monitor the work for the construction of river banks but they are not sure when the work will begin and when the contractor will begin their work . He hoped that works will start soon ahead of the rainy season.

The villagers had approach the former state water resources minister AL Hek and the incumbent minister Rowell Lyngdoh. Both the ministers had visited and inspected the river.- By Our Reporter
