SHILLONG, JAN 9: The Thma-U-Rangli-Juki (TUR) said that it would launch the ‘Red Beacon Campaign’ in the state to protest against the abuse of powers and violation of the recent Supreme Court ruling.
The Supreme Court has directed all the states to drastically restrict the number of VIPs using the red beacon in their cars and give the facility only to heads of the executive, the legislature and the judiciary and those holding constitutional posts.
The bench of justices GS Singhvi and C. Nagappan gave the ruling on a writ petition from Abhay Singh. It directed the states to amend the Motor Vehicle Rules to restrict the use of the red beacon and impose an exemplary fine on those who misuse it.
“The campaign encouraged the citizens to arm themselves with cameras in their mobile phones or others with which they should click a photograph if anybody is violating the court order,” TUR leader Angela Rngad told reporters on Thursday.
Rngad said the citizens are urged to be proactive and be part of this campaign and lodge a complaint with the authorities against any violation found. She added by saying, “It is the citizens who are the one who needs to ensure that law is implemented.” – By Our Reporter
