Shillong, August 30: Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma said that Meghalaya will have a stronger mechanism than the Inner Line Permit (ILP) for checking infiltration into the state. Conceding that infiltration and influx have to be checked stringently, he said the government is trying to institutionalise the infiltration checking mechanism in the State.
Responding to the queries about the demand of the ngos to implement the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the state, Sangma told reporters Thursday at his office chamber that this demand is an offshoot of what is happening across the country and the ethnic violence in Assam caused because of the infiltration.
Sangma, however, said that the issue is not only of “illegal infiltration” but also “influx” from other parts of the country to Meghalaya. He said, “When we are talking about infiltration and influx, we make reference to only one community and religion. But, people from other parts of the country are also coming to the state and we must ensure that the indigenous tribal of the state are not outnumbered.”
Thus Sangma felt that the government must have a mechanism that will not only check “illegal infiltration” but also influx from other parts of the country without “infringing into the rights of the Indian citizens.”
Sangma informed that the government is working out a stronger mechanism and one of it is setting up of Directorate of Infiltration. He also said that the traditional heads and the durbars at the local level can also play an effective role by screening the those who come to reside in their locality.- By Our Reporter
