SHILLONG, DEC 23: Impressed with Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma, Bollywood actor Vivek Oberoi said that if he ever wants to be a politician in life he would want to be like him. He said Sangma was a progressive politician and a rock star chief minister.
Speaking highly of Sangma during the “Mind Rock” youth summit held at state convention auditorium on Monday , Oberoi said that he had an opportunity to spent some time with Sangma and the latter came across as a progressive chief minister who also can sings.
Despite the 12-hour HNLC bandh call many came for the “Mind Rock” youth summit.
During the summit Assamese actor Zerifa Wahid and Founder of Manipur Women Gun Survivors Network Binalakshmi Nepram deliver talks on the topic – ‘Outsider in my own country’ which is relates to the challenges faced by women from north east in mainland India.
A talk on new politics for new India was also delivered by Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma, Head of Royal House of Tripura besides chief minister Mukul Sangma and others during the youth summit.
In his address during the summit, chief minister Mukul Sangma said that a strong northeastern region is going to contribute to the strength of the country while weaknesses of this region is going to weaken the nation.
Sangma said, “The nation will be weakened, if this part of the country remains vulnerable to all kinds of conflicts because of various factors which is inherent to this part of the country basically because of the offshoot of the partition or which is link to history.”
Sangma emphasized that understanding various problems, weakness and strength of this region is paramount to all policy makers and the people of the nation. He said there is a need to understand and allow this region to overcome all the challenges and get rid of the weaknesses and ensure that this region can actually become stronger, vibrant and contribute for the overall growth and prosperity of the nation.
Sangma felt that it is important for the entire nation to understand the strength of this region as he said many a time he felt certain policy design by policy makers including the overall perception about the NE including Meghalaya are all because of not having enough knowledge about the NE its people, richness, potentialities and the talents.
With this as a backdrop Sangma said that it is important for all from this region to try to reach out to every part of the country and also find out that every part of the nation has its own richness, potentialities which when brought together and leverage upon in a very scientific manner can help us to grow together.
Saying it is a question of breaking the “mind-barrier”, which often tend to divide us, Sangma said, “Many a times there is a perception that people from other parts of the country are yet to understand the people of this region because we have completely different way of life from the way we eat, dress, and live.” He felt that knowing all these (NE) will help the nation and help break the barrier that often comes in the way and tend to create a sense of alienation often perceived by younger generation.
According to Sangma organizing an events such as the Mind Rock Youth Summit will further enable the people from the different parts of the country to connect with this region as the north east is part of the nation capable of growing and contributing for the growth and prosperity of the nation.
Actor Vivek Oberoi also gave a talk on ‘Making it Big in Bollywood’ and shared his experiences – the success and failures he encountered in his 10 years of journey as an actor. He said, “The things I learn from life ( the ups and downs the hits and the flops) is never take success to your head and never take failure to your heart… you have to realize that success is not permanent and failure is isn’t too…you have to find the balance between the two.”.
Talking about his stay in Shillong Oberoi said he had a great time and Shillong is really a cool place to be. He also narrated his meeting with a 105 years old lady with whom he danced, had some kisses during his visit to the Mercy Home.
Oberoi said, “I met a pretty lady. We danced together and also got some kisses too from her (pointing to his cheeks). She was a 105 year-old lady and being able to dance and smile at her age… it’s an incredible thing to take back home,” he said.
Later, Mukul Sangma sang Eddie Rabbit’s evergreen favourite ‘Room at the top of the stairs’ and Jingle bells as Oberoi sway and dance as the crowd applauded.- By Our Reporter
