Shillong, November 27: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Councils has sought Rs 950 crores from the 14th Finance Commission during the meeting held on Wednesday.
Representatives of Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) put forward their funds requirement before the 14th Finance Commission members headed by its chairman Dr YV Reddy. The Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) however was not present in the meeting.
The Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) members also met the Finance Commission members but did not inform about what transpired during the meeting.
The KHADC sought the fund of Rs 950 crore for the next five years.
Addressing a news conference after meeting the 14th Finance Commission, KHADC CEM PN Syiem said he raised the issue of financial crisis in the district council.
KHADC representatives informed the Commission members that the council has to engage people for the maintenance of the Sacred Groves and the expenditure incurred is huge. The commission’s members were also briefed that the Council has works with Rangbah Shnongs and other traditional institutions and this too entails expenditure to the state exchequer
Syiem said the KHADC also raised the issue of development of the district council by developing rural markets and improving the judiciary system by setting up more village courts.
Later, in the day the members of the 14th finance commission also met the representatives of political parties and delegation of the Frontier Chamber of Commerce.
In the meeting, the delegation of the Frontier Chamber of Commerce wanted that the Umroi airport to be fully functional with daily flights .
The delegation also demanded that funds should be earmarked for converting Jowai-Silchar road to four lane road to help industrial development in the region.
Though New Shillong Township is being opposed by ngos, the delegation suggested early steps to complete the New Shillong Township project in view of the traffic congestion in and around Shillong.
The delegation also stressed for creating employment opportunities and recommended that the state government should come up with scheme to develop IT sector including call centers.- By Our Reporter
