Shillong, August, 27: Shillong Custom officials seized banned narcotics worth one crore rupees from a Myanmar-bound vehicle and arrested two transporters Monday.
The seizure came after the custom officials were given a tip off, accordingly laid a trap and intercepted a passenger vehicle bound for Mizoram Friday last at Mawlai.
The custom officials seized 50 kgs of Methaqualone crystals and more than nine lakh actichid and reobro tablets. The seizure is one of the biggest in recent time. However, the main dealers could not be found.
Informing about the effort of the customs to get to the real culprit(s) Additional Commissioner (NER) SK Chakraborty, said that the Mizoram police have been alerted for about the dealers who are in their state.
Chakraborty, however, refused to divulge the names of the transporters who have been arrested and put under judicial custody. The two have been charged under the Customs Act 1962 and narcotic drugs and psychotropic substance act 1985
According to Chakraborty, methaqualone crystal is a raw material for manufacturing of Mandrax, a highly addictive substance previously used by medics as a sleeping pill. Besides actichid and reobro tablets contain pseudoephedrine used in manufacturing of amphetamine tablets commonly known as ATS in the market.
Explaining about the smuggling routes of these banned drugs Mynamar, Chakraborty said the items were loaded in Guwahati city and the transporters either use the Shillong or Dimapur as routes before they are exported across the border to Myanmar. The drugs made way to the illegal international market routing through the NE, where it is produced legally in the country.- By Our Reporter
