SHILLONG,NOV 15: Even as the five evicted families of Mawlong-Mawtari and Umsawli villages agreed with the state government to maintain status quo on the land where the New Shillong Township will come up , the families however refused to accept the government offer to relocated them in the urban poor dwelling in Nongmynsong.
Urban affairs minister Ampareen Lyngdoh said on Friday following a meeting, the families agreed not encroach on the land and the government too will not make any more evictions till the matter is resolved by the court of law.
Lyngdoh told reporters, “The families have rejected our offer to relocate them at Nongmynsong stating that they have made arrangements.” She also said the families can contest the ownership of the land in the civil court.
When reporters wanted to get a reaction from the families on the meeting, they refused to talk saying they were unhappy with the meeting and did not accept the offer to relocate. Instead Rangbah Shnong of Mawpat Kharbuit Ryntathiang spoke on their behalf and said that families refused to accept because they are farmers and it will be difficult for them to take their livestock to Nongmynsong.
Maintaining that the Dorbar has taken a neutral stand on the issue Ryntathiang said, “We are concerned over the current impasse on land and therefore we feel that the government should take certain steps to address the issue,” adding, “We are satisfied with the meeting and the families too will take up the matter in the court of law.”
According to Lyngdoh, when the court dismissed their case in 2010 the families did not contest. And as per the documents available with the deputy commissioner the five families were not in the notified list of land owners, she informed.- By Our Reporter
